This short walk strings together three of our near-airport field notes. It starts by the sea, climbs a gentle hill and ends in the old lanes of Bandra, with cafés at every turn.
Before you start
- Distance: about 2 km, or 1½–2 hours with stops.
- Best time: early morning or late afternoon; the promenade is lovely towards sunset.
- Terrain: a gentle climb to the basilica and a flight of steps down. Wear shoes you can slip off at the church.

- Bandstand Promenade. Walk the 1.2 km seafront path with the Sea Link on the horizon. Joggers, couples and chai sellers keep it busy from early morning. Map ↗
- Mount Mary Basilica. Head uphill to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, a place of pilgrimage for people of many faiths. Follow the customs posted at the entrance. Read the field note. Map ↗
- The Mount Mary steps. Walk down the old flight of steps towards the lanes of the village below. Map ↗
- Chapel Road. Finish in the lanes around Chapel Road, where street art brightens the walls, including murals from the Bollywood Art Project, started in 2012. These are people’s homes: keep your voice down and ask before photographing anyone. Map ↗
Fitting it into a layover
Bandra is roughly 20–45 minutes from the airport by road, which makes this walk possible on a shorter layover than anything in South Mumbai. With about 6 hours on the ground and no bags to collect, it can work if your flight lands on time; check your window with the layover checker.
In the week after 8 September, the Mount Mary Fair brings very large crowds to the hill. See festivals and events.
