Can I leave the airport?
Add your flight times and we’ll work out how long you’d really have outside, and which parts of Mumbai fit. It takes about 30 seconds.

Add your two flight times to see how long you’d have outside the airport, and where that gets you.
Cautious estimates, not promises. Your airline’s rules and the live traffic always come first.
The same sums we use.
We plan every Detour backwards from your departure. The checker uses the same cautious allowances as our guides.
| Block of time | We allow |
|---|---|
| Landing to leaving arrivals: immigration, and bags if you collect them | 1 hour, or 1½ hours with bags |
| Back at the airport before you fly | 3 hours for an international flight, 2 hours within India |
| Close to the airport | 20–45 min each way; about 2½ hours outside the airport to be comfortable |
| Central Mumbai | 30–60 min each way; about 3 hours outside the airport to be comfortable |
| South Mumbai | 45–75 min each way, or the Aqua Line; about 4 hours outside the airport to be comfortable |
| Elephanta and Kanheri | a ferry or a forest road on top of the drive; about 7 hours outside the airport to be comfortable |
What’s left after leaving arrivals and getting back is your time outside, and the drive comes out of it. We call an area comfortable when cautious road times still leave room for a real visit, and tight when it only works if immigration is quick and traffic is kind.
Before you step out.
Can I leave Mumbai airport during a layover?
Yes, if you can enter India and you have enough time. Leaving means clearing immigration, so you need a valid Indian visa or e-Visa unless you are an Indian citizen or OCI cardholder. Then allow for the drive each way and around 3 hours back at the airport before an international departure.
How long a layover do I need to leave the airport?
As a rough rule, at least 6 hours on the ground, and ideally 8 or more. With 6 hours and carry-on bags only, a short outing near the airport can work if your inbound flight lands on time. With 8 hours, South Mumbai comes within reach.
Do I need a visa if I stay inside the airport?
If you connect from one international flight to another inside the international transit area, without passing through passport control, you don’t need an Indian visa. You just can’t leave the airport.
What if my inbound flight lands late?
Run the numbers again with the new landing time. If the window drops below what a place needs, stay airside. Detour routes are built backwards from your departure, so stops get trimmed, never the time you need for your flight.
What do I do with my bags?
If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you don’t need to touch them. If you have to collect them, the airport has a left-luggage cloakroom; allow a few extra minutes at each end.
