Mumbai’s monsoon usually arrives in June and eases off by the end of September. Some days bring a few showers; others bring downpours that stop traffic. On a layover, the rain doesn’t have to rule the city out, but it should shape your plan.
When it rains
Expect the heaviest rain in July and August, with the shoulders of the season in June and September. Forecasts help, but conditions can change within an hour, so check the weather and any official advisories on the day.
What the rain changes
- Traffic slows down. Waterlogged roads can turn a 45-minute drive into something much longer. Double your usual road buffer.
- Flights can be delayed. Heavy rain can affect arrivals and departures, which shrinks or shifts your window.
- The seafront needs care. On high-tide days, waves crash over the promenade wall at Marine Drive. It’s spectacular from a distance, but stay well back, and follow any closures or warnings from the authorities.
What still works
- Stay closer to the airport. Bandra and Juhu cut the drive right down. See our short-layover guide for near-airport ideas.
- Choose covered stops. Irani cafés, museums like CSMVS and a slow lunch make a rainy afternoon a pleasure, not a wash-out.
- Look at the architecture from under cover. The Gothic and Art Deco buildings of Fort look moody and beautiful in the rain.
- Consider the metro. The Aqua Line runs underground from the airport, which can help when roads flood. Check service updates first. See airport to the city.
What to carry
- A compact umbrella or light rain jacket
- Sandals or shoes you don’t mind getting wet
- A waterproof pouch for your passport, printed visa and phone
- A spare T-shirt in your day bag for the flight
