This route is flat, mostly shaded by buildings, and full of places to stop. It starts near the Regal Circle end of Kala Ghoda and finishes at CSMT, where the Aqua Line can take you back towards the airport.
Before you start
- Distance: about 3.5 km, or 2–3 hours with stops.
- Best time: late morning to late afternoon, when the galleries are open. Many museums close one day a week; check before you go.
- Crossings: the roads around Flora Fountain and CSMT are busy. Use the signals and subways.

The route
- National Gallery of Modern Art. Start at the domed Cowasji Jehangir Hall, home since 1996 to the gallery’s changing exhibitions of modern Indian art. Map ↗
- CSMVS Museum and garden. The city’s great museum sits in a shady garden just across the road. Even if you don’t go in, walk up to the dome. Read the field note. Map ↗
- Jehangir Art Gallery. Built in 1952, with four halls of shows by working artists. Entry to exhibitions is usually free; check what’s on. Map ↗
- Knesset Eliyahoo Synagogue. The pale-blue synagogue, completed in 1884, is one of the prettiest façades in the city. It is a place of worship: look from the street unless it is open to visitors. Map ↗
- Kala Ghoda square. The district is named after a black statue of a horse and rider that once stood here; since 2017 a riderless horse, the Spirit of Kala Ghoda, has brought it back. Cafés and galleries fan out from here. Read the field note. Map ↗
- David Sassoon Library. A yellow-stone Gothic library completed in 1870, among the first buildings put up after the old fort walls came down. Map ↗
- Oval Maidan. Stand on the grass between two centuries: Victorian Gothic on one side, Art Deco apartments on the other. Read the field note. Map ↗
- Rajabai Clock Tower and the High Court. From the Oval, look east. The 85-metre Rajabai Tower was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and completed in 1878, the same year the Gothic Revival High Court beside it was finished. Map ↗
- Flora Fountain and Hutatma Chowk. The 1864 fountain of the goddess Flora stands in a square renamed in 1961 to honour those killed in the campaign for Maharashtra. Map ↗
- Asiatic Library and Town Hall. Climb the famous steps, or just sit on them. Read the field note. Map ↗
- BMC headquarters and CSMT. Finish between two Gothic giants. The station is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Aqua Line has a stop right here. Read the field note. Map ↗
A shorter version
Only an hour? Walk from Jehangir Art Gallery to Kala Ghoda square, past the synagogue and the David Sassoon Library, then cut across to the Oval Maidan for the view of the tower. It covers the best of it in about a kilometre.
Fitting it into a layover
South Mumbai is 45–75 minutes from the airport by road on an ordinary day. The Aqua Line runs from both terminals to Hutatma Chowk and CSMT, which makes this walk one of the easiest to reach by metro. You’ll want at least 8 hours on the ground; check yours with the layover checker.
The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival takes over these streets every year around the start of February.
